Society does not          define me.

Through our culturally relevant programming, mentoring, conferences, speaking engagements, books and therapeutic services; our girls take a pledge to not allow societies statistics to define them! We must break the cycle. We will through social entrepreneurship, mentoring and educational resources.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

TARGET POPULATION: Youth/Adolescent ages 8-17 that are at-risk of not reaching their full potential due to challenges at home, at school, and/or in their neighborhood.

PROGRAM IMPACT: We have impacted over 25,000 girls in twenty years! 22 Local Schools, 31 National IDM School Chapters, presences in 6 Countries. Increasing self-esteem, literacy, decreasing relational aggression, bullying, and giving girls and women a safe space to define wellness. Women & girls share their stories and define their voices to make an impact on the world mentally, physically, spiritually, financially, and emotionally! Our Motto is simple…I Define ME.

PROGRAM MISSION: The I Define ME Movement's (IDM) mission is to create quality mentoring relationships for students who need them most. The program creates both group and one-to-one relationships between trusted adult mentors and students who lack positive adult relationships. The program exposes each student to new opportunities for learning and growth, with an emphasis on creating healthy relationships, promoting academic achievements, health and wellness, and providing critical life skills for future success.

The facilitators act as guides to the participants to connect the dots of learning and give an opportunity for the participants to have positive interactions with a positive mentor, week to week. IDM integrates outcome measurements for the students into ongoing operations. Data is gathered during the pre-intake assessment of each student, a Strengths and Difficulties Assessment, and a Post Assessment. The data is then used to see how youth has progressed through the programs.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:

  • To provide positive guidance, promoting personal and social responsibility.

  • To improve attendance achievement, academic engagement; by providing effective, educational, and supportive mentorship activities.

  • To increase positive behaviors, reduce risk behaviors, and improve self-control; to encourage positive choices and to reach their full potential.

  • To discourage the use of illegal drugs and firearms, involvement in violence/gangs, and other delinquent activity by at-risk youth.

  • To promote positive goal setting; and skills to measure those future goals.

  • To encourage participation in school and community service activities.

PROGRAM EVALUATION:

  • A total of 375 students, with a total of 7 facilitators.

  • We meet weekly for 12-16 weeks per semester; for 1 hour per period for 5 periods.

  • The I Define Me Movement employs a comprehensive platform specifically crafted to offer thorough exploration of each lesson plan activity. For a sample lesson plan, Click Here.

NARRATIVE SUMMARY:

Over the past 16 weeks, our program has demonstrated significant successes, alongside some challenges, while presenting the I Define Me Movement Programs: SistaKeeper (Empowerment), SistaPreneur (Entrepreneurship), and DominateSTL (Mentorship). Our quantitative data demonstrates the benefits of the students having mentors, beyond school staff, that provide a safe and courageous space to define life skills, improve interpersonal communication, and practice positive emotional regulation. Additionally, the entrepreneurial program provides experiential tools to navigate customer service skills, self-management, business development, and problem solving.

 PROGAM SUCCESSES:

  • Our program has effectively provided a space for students to engage with mentors, that fosters a courageous space to explore thoughts, feelings and emotions.

  • The girls in our entrepreneurial program have notably benefited from exploring entrepreneurship strategies and alternative routes to building successful businesses.

  • DominateSTL has cultivated a culture where young men are reflective of their own actions, motivations, and the potential consequences of each.

  • We successfully organized external activities without behavioral issues, including taking the Dominate STL boys to a Cardinals game, the entrepreneurial girls to an ULTA beauty conference, and the iDM girls to the International Day of the Girl at the Missouri History Museum.

These experiences have been invaluable in broadening the horizons of our participants.

CHALLENGES AND RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Student Motivation: Some students do not find the classes valuable and choose to disengage, facing no consequences for their lack of participation. Although we provide incentives, the absence of grades or credit diminishes their motivation to participate. We recommend a positive behavior enforcement plan that is in alignment with SE disciplinary standards and allows recourse for disruptive situations.

  • Classroom Size: We have observed the current classroom sizes, ranging from 15-25 students, hinders the progress of our participants. For more effective social-emotional development, we recommend reducing the class size to 10-12 students. This adjustment would better accommodate the individual and community challenges, as well as the trauma that our students face.

  • Engagement: Some students do not fully engage with the program, often due to the lack of tangible incentives like grades or credits. To address this, we suggest exploring a pass/fail evaluation or attendance based policy.

  • Parental Involvement: While we hosted a successful community utility resource fair in collaboration with the Diamond Diva Empowerment Foundation, we believe increasing parental engagement through more frequent parent meetings could further empower our students' families.

Despite these hurdles, we are encouraged by the progress we have seen and are optimistic about the impact of our program in the remaining semester. We are committed to continuous improvement and value the partnership with the school in making a positive difference in the lives of our youth.
